Can I tell you something….I am offended.
I know nearly everyone is offended, nearly all of the time. I also know that this post will offend some of you.
We live in a culture that wants to be offended. Things that really have no bearing, or meaning to us, we take offense to. That is the culture of today. Always looking for something to “take up arms” against. Some “right” that we perceive a need to fight for. Someone is always trying to “bring us down”. It seems to grow to lower levels with each passing week.
I understand there are things that we don’t like. Things that we wish hadn’t happened. Words we wish hadn’t been said. But when did our society start to take these completely impersonal events so personally? Someone has an opinion different than ours so, we feel the need to be offended, and we then tell the world how offended we are or how horrible that person is. Or someone speaks their views, and people that disagree get offended and start speaking their views, so then we feel the need to be offended by the offended and speak our views. It is a never ending cycle of lowest common denominator communication….and I am sick of it. But that is our society. That is the world we live in.
But as a Christian, how do we fit in?
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, and the new is here! – 2 Corinthians 5:17
So if we are really a new creation….why do we as Christians constantly fight the same battles, and use the same tactics as the world? Why do we fight at all? Just because we are fighting for the opposite belief, doesn’t make it ok to use the same method. We have come to a place where Christians have the incorrect belief that we need to fight for the rights of Christians. But that is directly opposed to what the term “Christian” means.
Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. – Matthew 16:24
You see, the only rights we have are those granted to us by God. The only job, or right, that Jesus gave us was to tell the world about Him. Not fighting for our own “rights”. The things that we hold dear, we have to die to daily.
To him who strikes you on the one cheek, offer the other also. And from him who takes away your cloak, do not withhold your tunic either. – Luke 6:29
If you truly are “different” than the world. If you really are in the world and not of it. Then you need to quit acting in a way that lets you fit in the world so well. If the only difference I can see between you and the world is which side of the fight you are on….then you aren’t very different than the world. Quit bashing Beiber in one breath, and defending Duck Dynasty in the next. Quit bashing the president one moment, and lauding Chick-Fil-A the next. Quit attacking Donald Miller today, while pretending his view has nothing to do with how the church operates tomorrow. I am not saying I agree or disagree with your view on any of these topics. I am also not saying you aren’t allowed to an opinion on them. What I am saying is, quit acting like the world. Be different. Be the change. Quit worrying about your “rights” (rights that you must die to daily to follow Christ in the first place), and start worrying about the condition of the the souls of the people that we have been offended by.
I close with this; if you were offended by the harshness of this blog….then you may have missed the point. Reread it.
